Here at the Strategist, we like to think of ourselves as crazy (in the good way) about the stuff we buy, but as much as we’d like to, we can’t try everything. Which is why we have People’s Choice, in which we find the best-reviewed products and single out the most convincing ones. (You can learn more about our rating system and how we pick each item here.)

And while we’ve written about boots before — including the best rain boots for women and winter boots for men — here, we’ve rounded up the best boot trays, as praised by the most enthusiastic reviewers on Amazon.

Best-rated boot tray

“This set of boot trays was exactly what my entryway needed,” writes one of over 1,200 five-star reviewers. Another says, “Call it a boot tray, or call it a shoe tray, just don’t call it useless. This is proof positive that the 21st century can benefit from items considered ‘old fashioned.’” In terms of the actual design of this boot tray, lots of reviewers point to the “grooves” that provide grip, and, according to another reviewer, “let the shoes stay slightly higher than the bottom and allow water to drain off. The high edges keep the water in, so it doesn’t spill out.” Another calls this boot tray, “Sturdy and attractive with high enough edges to keep the snow and salt mess off the floor.” You can purchase just one if you prefer, but a lot of reviewers report being very happy that they got two: “The fact that I got two trays for this great price was a fantastic deal.”

Best-rated (less expensive) boot tray

85 percent of the reviewers who purchased this boot tray gave it five-stars, citing its high-quality construction and good value. “Wow, these are gorgeous and heavy-duty,” writes one purchaser who bought two. “Better than I expected from the pictures. These are perfect for all of the winter shows and boots that will soon be piling up.” Another writes that they’ve found all sorts of unexpected uses for it: “I have several of these around the house. One for indoor plants to catch water if I give them too much, two for winter boots, one in the pantry for bottled water in case they leak, and one in the cleaning closet to hold cleaning liquids and catch spills should they occur.” But more than anything, purchasers say it excels at its intended purpose of holding boots. As one puts it, “These are exactly what I was looking for to put wet/muddy boots and shoes on by the front door. Big enough to hold 3-4 pairs of shoes or boots, sturdy, and easy to clean. Glad I bought two.”

And now, some micro-picks for every type of boot try you might be looking for.

Best heavy-duty boot tray

According to dozens of reviewers, this boot tray from Iron Gate is particularly “heavy-duty.” “They weren’t kidding when they called it ‘Heavy Duty,’” one reviewer noted, adding, “The rubber is VERY thick and the deep grooves are perfect for holding melting snow and ice from our shoes and boots.” Another customer echos that sentiment, saying, “Nothing damages this. I’ve had mine for a few years now and they look like new. Cleans easy and has a taller lip on the outside to keep the salt and dirt on the mat.”

Best boot tray with handles

Muddy-Mat’s all-purpose boot tray gets high marks all around, but some reviewers particularly appreciate the fact that it has a handle on each side, which they say makes it much easier to clean and move around. One purchaser ordered this tray to place in their trunk and “to put trash bags on when I take them to the dump.” They say that the handles are very useful for this occasionally messy task. “This will hold one or two typical 13-gallon kitchen trash bags and, if they leak, it is easy to hose it off to clean it. It has a lip to contain any liquid and the handles that make it easy to pick it up to dump it out.”

Best small boot tray

At 20-inches by 15-inches, this boot tray is smaller and more compact than others on Amazon. Many purchasers report being very happy to find something this size, especially for smaller spaces. As one five-star reviewer explains, “This boot tray is small, but it was exactly what I wanted. I purchased it for my son’s dorm room so that he and his roommate could put their snowy, wet, and muddy boots on the tray instead of having them drip on the dorm room carpet.” And many write that the small footprint comes in handy to protect their floor from dripping dehumidifiers and portable A/C units. “I slid this bad boy in underneath the portable AC and it works and fits like a charm.” Another purchaser says it helped address a leaky water cooler: “Our water cooler was leaking, and my husband was super irritated and worried about the floor. I bought this and the cooler fits perfectly on it. Just what we needed”

Best boot tray for pet bowls

Though lots of people use other boot trays for tasks besides holding boots, dozens write about using this tray as a protective surface to prevent their pets from making a mess. One says, “This was just what I needed for my dogs’ food and water bowls. They always get water and food all over, and this helps an enormous amount.” Another chimes in: “I have a boxer and he drinks about half the water from his bowl. The other half is on the floor. Now I have this tray and it just goes on the tray.” They add, “It’s super easy to take to the sink and wash off. I even use it to put some of their dog food on it and let it soak in the water so they get the soft food option as well.”
