There was a point last year when I became obsessed with uniform dressing — of wearing the same outfit every day by choice. I was convinced that if I could find just one cute and affordable coverall-style jumpsuit (not to be confused with a romper), I would be able to streamline my morning routine, minimize mundane decision-making, and never have to worry about looking professional ever again. But finding that perfect jumpsuit was more of a challenge than I’d anticipated. Most simple, stylish jumpsuits I found online were from high-end designers and cost hundreds of dollars, while the more affordable, fast-fashion options were over-designed with artificial distressing and embellishments. That’s when I headed to the (very glamorous) Work Utility and Safety Apparel section of Amazon and discovered the Five Rock Poplin Short Sleeve Unlined Coveralls.
They might not look it, but these unisex coveralls are surprisingly formfitting, with an elastic waist that keeps me from feeling like I’ve put on a hazmat suit à la Walter White. When I leave the top snap unbuttoned, I show what feels like an appropriate amount of décolletage. It’s also wildly practical, with two large pockets on the hips; two generous chest pockets (perfect for iPhone storage); and a front zipper instead of buttons, which makes going to the bathroom a breeze.
In the year I’ve owned it, I’ve found the poplin fabric breathable and friendly for all seasons. In the summer, I’ll cuff the ankle and sleeves, tie a bandanna or silk scarf around my neck, and finish with a practical pair of Birkenstocks, or a pair of chunky wooden heels. In the winter, I swap out the sandals for colorful ankle boots; and in those transitional months, I’ll wear it with a pair of white sneakers.
My affection for the piece has reached the point where I actually feel a little lost when I reach for the jumpsuit in the morning, only to remember that it’s in the wash. But since these coveralls are less than $40 apiece, I can stock up on all of the colors without breaking the bank — or having to really think about dressing myself ever again.
