If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what famous people add to their carts. Not the JAR brooch and Louis XV chair but the hair spray and the electric toothbrush. We asked actor Tomás Matos — who recently co-starred in Hulu’s Fire Island — about their everyday pumping shoes, the eye glitter that level-upped their makeup game, and their “high-class” instant coffee.
I allow myself 10 to 15 minutes in the morning to meditate and write. I like having blank pages because I tend to freeform-write to get all my thoughts out. I manifest the life and career and energy I want to receive in the world. Journaling is also an outlet for me to release the stressors and thoughts that run amok in my everyday life. It’s one of my favorite and most beneficial forms of self-care. I keep all my journals and have some that go back to my junior year of high school.
This is a recent find. I went to a Mario Badescu event that Martha Stewart was throwing, and this was in my goodie bag. It dries out my pimples and gives me that burning sensation, which I’m kind of obsessed with now because I know it’s working. I’ll apply it at night and when I wake up in the morning, the pimple is definitely flatter. She does the job.
I went to Sephora recently and told one of the makeup artists I was looking for a gold inner-eye accent, and they showed me Danessa Myricks. I was like, Oh my God, this is iconic. The girls at Sephora know what they’re doing. Instead of applying glitter dust or specs, it’s more similar to shards or glitter glass or flakes. It breaks up and crackles after applying it, so you get this sickening iridescent look that makes the eye pop. It really changed up my eye-makeup game.
I usually get an SNS dip of a single color at the nail salon and add my own designs with this kit. I’m a lefty, so whenever I do my left hand, I have to do it a few times. (I’m not ambidextrous like that.) The brushes make it super-easy though. I really like a minimalist design — sometimes I’ll add a single black line to every nail and have an accent with two lines, or do a ball-dot accent, or dots and swirls. The options are endless, and it adds my own flair to my nails. It’s one of my favorite outlets of self-expression.
As a nonbinary person, I’m always looking for ways to express my feminine side outside of dressing up for events and serving a sickening look. I want to be able to step into my divine feminine and express my nonbinary finery at Target or when I’m at the gym. These are comfortable and make me feel effortlessly femme. It really encompasses all parts of me and I can wear it everywhere.
I found out about Marek + Richard during Pride in either 2019 or 2018. They’ve really evolved since then. Before, it was catered to the femme gay boy and they mostly had crop tops. Now, they have a lot more femme or gender-nonconforming clothes, pieces for trans women and every sort of body. This is my favorite everyday skirt from them. You know how everyone needs a mini black dress in their closet? I have to have a mini black skirt. It pairs with so many different pieces, and this one’s sensible. It’s a utility skirt, so it has cargo pockets and belt loops. I like to swap out cute belts that match my outfits. I have a red belt that I’ll pair with red pumps or a chain belt that I’ll pair with my chain necklace and earrings — just to add extra levels of cunt to the look. And I love that there’s a zipper in the middle of it, so it has easy access.
I have so many favorite crop tops from Marek + Richard. You could close your eyes, scroll on the website, click on one, and I’d be obsessed with it. But one that I’m really into right now because it’s of the moment, is a baby-pink one that says “I’m Baby” on it. I like wearing it with little pink sunglasses, my pink hat, and a miniskirt. I wore it for an ABC7 News interview in the Bay Area, and the interviewer was obsessed with it. I was like, Hi, hello. He was giving very daddy vibes. This shirt’s the perfect way to let the daddies know that I’m baby.
My friend told me, “If someone were to make a portrait of you, you’d be wearing these shoes.” They’re not wrong. These replaced other Doc heels I had that got discontinued, but I ended up liking these more because the platform makes them more comfortable. I can actually pump in these, so it’s my everyday New York City pumping shoe. I literally just bought an extra pair of them and haven’t worn them yet because I want a painted pair of DIY Docs — I just don’t know what to get on them yet.
This is my grandparents’ morning coffee, and my family’s everyday coffee. It’s their shit. So I’ve taken it along in my own everyday life after I left home. It’s a dark, rich flavor, almost like espresso. It reminds me of drinking coffee somewhere in the Mediterranean or in Barcelona or Italy. It makes me feel high-class. I do a café con leche with an almond milk, because I don’t do dairy like that.
Nowadays, I drink Emergen-C every day. It’s a necessity because Miss Covida is still out here, girl. I really like the raspberry one because the orange is so regular. The raspberry gives vitamin C but bougie. As a sober girl, I like to pair it with a seltzer because it feels like I’m making a sexy, good-for-you mocktail. Sometimes I’ll add raspberries as a garnish or cut a strawberry in half and put it on there to make it cute.
A girl is always on the go, honey. And if your phone dies, you’re done. Not being able to call and Uber is the worst feeling in the world. I’ve had that tragic moment where I’ve called an Uber and my phone died. I didn’t remember the license-plate number, and I was just running around trying to figure out which car was mine. So now, I make sure to always bring my portable charger. Sadly, it doesn’t fit in my mini-purses, but I always find a friend who does have a pocket that can hold it.
