On Bill Maher’s Politically Incorrect in 1999, then-pundit and current Republican nomination for the Senate in Delaware Christine O’Donnell explained her background in sorcery:
“I dabbled into witchcraft — I never joined a coven. But I did, I did. I dabbled into witchcraft. I hung around people who were doing these things. I’m not making this stuff up. I know what they told me they do … One of my first dates with a witch was on a satanic altar, and I didn’t know it. I mean, there’s a little blood there and stuff like that … We went to a movie and then had a little midnight picnic on a satanic altar.”
After Bill Maher aired those tapes last night on his HBO show, O’Donnell suddenly canceled her appearances on CBS’s Face the Nation and Fox News Sunday. In her defense, who wants to dredge up painful memories about the time you dated that witch who charmed you with a picnic basket at a bloody alter? Nobody wants to go down that road again! Of course, a date with a witch is old hat for O’Donnell, what with her already being anti-masturbation, doubting evolution, and her hypothetical refusal to deceive Nazis about where the Jews were hiding.
But as O’Donnell starts to shy away from the media, for tomorrow at least, could all this hype end up helping her? Even if O’Donnell skips her media appearances on Sunday, Maher now plans to keep on playing old clips of O’Donnell on his HBO show.
