Everyone knows that taxi drivers will often refuse to travel into the outer boroughs or will even hit you with their cars in rare instances despite their legal obligation to take passengers anywhere in the city. But just how prevalent the practice had become wasn’t known until the Taxi and Limousine Commission did some undercover work. The numbers: Out of 260 attempts by would-be passengers to get a ride from Manhattan to another borough, only 50 percent were successful.
