Newt Gingrich’s big, confusing announcement today turned out to be quite underwhelming in the end. “We are excited about exploring whether there is sufficient support for my potential candidacy for president of this exceptional country,” Gingrich told reporters in Atlanta this afternoon. But despite his use of the word “exploring,” Gingrich is not setting up an exploratory committee yet. It’s not because he’s not sure whether he’s going to run come on, now it’s because, as the Times reports, he needs to delay such a step “until he finishes delivering paid speeches later this month and distances himself from a web of business ventures that would interfere with a campaign.” [Reuters, NYT]
