President Obama now has an unusual ally in his campaign to raise taxes on the wealthy: Weekly Standard editor and Republican pundit Bill Kristol. Appearing on Fox News Sunday earlier today, Kristol said, “It won’t kill the country if we raise taxes a little bit on millionaires. It really won’t, I don’t think. I don’t really understand why Republicans don’t take Obama’s offer.” (Maybe it’s because much of the re-elected Republican House majority has signed Grover Norquist’s no-tax pledge and are holding John Boehner’s feet to the fire?) Regardless, Kristol just doesn’t see the long-term political gain. Why, he wondered, would the Republican party “fall on its sword to defend a bunch of millionaires, half of whom voted Democratic and half of whom live in Hollywood and are hostile?” Perhaps the Republicans can find a way to tax people for having an IMDB profile.
