While CNN has benefited from the increase in natural and man-made disasters over the past few weeks, MSNBC has slipped to fourth place in cable news, behind even HLN. Phil Griffin, the network’s president, offered the New York Times a somewhat surprising explanation: They aren’t even trying to be the best source on tornadoes, terrorist attacks, and the like. “We’re not the place for that,” he said of CNN’s breaking news coverage. “Our brand is not that.” MSNBC takes the tagline “The Place for Politics” seriously, and remains confident that viewers will return after seeking comfort in Wolf Blitzer’s confident, beardy coverage.
