According to data released by Civilian Complaint Review Board, the independent city agency responsible for looking into complaints against the NYPD, officers are rarely disciplined for reported misconduct. In fact, according to WNYC, the NYPD only followed the CCRB’s recommended course of action about 9.7 percent of the time.
The CCRB investigates complaints filed against the NYPD and recommends three different courses of action depending on the severity of the complaint: charges, discipline, and instruction. The NYPD rarely follows these recommendations.
Writes WNYC:
In 2012 overall, the NYPD followed the CCRB’s recommendation in only 25 out 258 cases (9.7%). Officers received no discipline at all in 104 cases (40.3%).
