The family of Eric Garner, the 43-year-old Staten Island resident who was killed when an NYPD officer put him in a chokehold, filed a notice of claim to the comptroller’s office today, announcing that it will seek $75 million in damages from the city. The claim argues that the NYPD officers involved “failed to use proper police procedure and tactics as reasonably prudent and careful police officers would have used under similar circumstances.”
