It’s such a strange season to be a Knicks fan. Ordinarily, training camp would be either full of optimism and big hopes, or an opportunity to bash dunderheaded moves and an aimless strategy. But this year, the Knicks are plainly stating that they’re in a holding pattern, just keeping the uniforms warm until next season, when they go after LeBron, or Chris Bosh, or Dwyane Wade. That’s all fine and good, and it’s a smart strategy … but how the heck are we supposed to keep ourselves occupied this season?
It appears the Knicks’$2 2009-10 season is going to be one long Easter-egg hunt for possible clues that maybe, possibly, there’s always a chance! LeBron James might be considering coming here. There’s not going to be much else to cover. It began — or continued, really — with the Daily News story this morning that James confidant (and secret ruler of the NBA) William Wesley has been hanging out with the team a bunch so far. What does that mean? Well, it probably means that he’s helping Eddy Curry drop weight, just like he said he was. But! But!
The Knicks’ association with Wesley doesn’t guarantee that the club has the inside track on signing LeBron. But as one team executive noted, “We’re leaving no stone unturned.”
Donnie Walsh clearly knows what he’s doing; the story says he personally asked Wesley to oversee Curry’s weight training. It’s pretty clear that Walsh’s “concern” about Curry is limited to “when can we make him leave?” but hey, having one of LeBron’s buddies — and the guy who runs the NBA, remember — around probably never hurts.
