We Have Not Forgotten About You, St. John’s

Coach Norm Roberts.

We have been negligent in our salutations toward St. John’s basketball. We were on the bandwagon earlier, because of the red-hot start, and we even noticed how well they played Duke in a loss. But then we left them alone for a while. Didn’t want to jinx them. We find it fun to have irrational superstitions about a Catholic school.

Well, the Red Storm beat Hofstra at the Garden last night to raise their record to 9–1 and advance to the finals of the holiday festival. (They’re playing Cornell in the title game tonight — they’re 8–2 and also quite good, much to the joy of the Nard Dog.) It’s even more impressive that St. John’s has played so well without Anthony Mason Jr., who might be out until February with a hamstring issue.

If St. John’s can win at MSG tonight, they’ll be looking at 11–1 going into their first Big East game, on New Year’s Eve at Georgetown. It could be 11–1 St. John’s at 9–1 Georgetown. Just like old times. You have to love it.
