There are few sentences in sports scarier than “[An important player on your favorite team] was examined by Dr. James Andrews this week.” So, generally speaking, here’s something you don’t want to read: Mark Sanchez was examined by Dr. James Andrews this week. But before you get your Kellen Clemens jersey out of storage, know that it really isn’t that bad.
After meeting with Andrews, Sanchez is considering undergoing surgery on his left knee, which he injured in 2008 during the first week of fall practice with USC. He’s worn a brace on the knee ever since, and banged it up again this year against Carolina. (He won’t, however, need surgery on his right knee, which he hurt against the Bills in December, causing him to miss the following game against Tampa Bay.) The operation would fix the ligament that stabilizes the patella, but GM Mike Tannenbaum says the procedure isn’t anything significant, and that it would be “much more preventive, strengthening, things like that.” He said he expects Sanchez to be healthy well before training camp.
In other news, Tannenbaum said the Jets would tender an offer to the aforementioned Clemens. So keep that jersey in storage, but maybe don’t throw it away yet, either.
