If you were the type of fan who thought Bengie Molina was going to hit twenty home runs and knock in 80 RBIs for the Mets this season, then you’re probably disappointed to learn that Molina just re-signed with the Giants. If you think the Mets would have overpaid for a slow, free-swinging, aging, and overrated catcher who didn’t appear to want to play here anyway, you respect that the Mets stared him down and stood their ground. Though, considering Molina signed for one year at only $4.5 million, you have to wonder just how low the Mets offer really was, if there was ever one in the first place. (Jon Heyman says he took less to go back to the Giants.) The view here is that the Mets were better off spending that money on Ben Sheets anyway, assuming someone doesn’t go crazy and offer him more. Omir Santos, ahoy!
