You know how they had the “Favre cam” for the Monday Night Football game between the Packers and the Vikings, and the “Tebow cam” in the Sugar Bowl? We formally request that the muckety-mucks at NBC — which is broadcasting the game, with a team of Joe Theismann and Joe Gibbs, strangely — set up a “Rex Ryan cam” during the game this Saturday. We guarantee you, at certain points, it’ll be more entertaining than what’s happening on the field.
Ryan loves to make a spectacle out of himself in order to take the spotlight off his players, and he is skilled at it. Yesterday, Ryan played Tunnel Vision Clueless Man for the media’s benefit:
When asked Wednesday how it felt to be labeled as the biggest long shot of the 12 playoff teams, Jets Coach Rex Ryan replied: “I wasn’t aware of that. To me, we should be the favorites. … If I had a chance to coach any team in this tournament, I would choose this one.”
Now, Ryan is not a fool: He’s surely aware that the Jets are far from the favorites, and, all told, one suspects he wouldn’t mind having Drew Brees and Adrian Peterson around, either. But we are all talking about Ryan today, how “brash” he is and how much of a great motivator he is, so if the Jets pull the upset off, Ryan will look smart and his players will adore him even more. These games are easier to play than they seem.
