Hey, Look, Optimism in the Mets’ Camp!

Beyond the acquisition of Jason Bay, it’s safe to say that Omar Minaya’s off-season didn’t do a whole to lot inspire the Mets’ fan base. But at least there’s help on the way. Maybe. Eventually. Already this spring, Jerry Manuel has described 20-year-old pitching prospect Jenrry Mejia’s stuff as “electric,” and though Kevin Kernan’s Post column includes the words “possible ace” when describing the righty’s future, Manual said he might consider him for the eighth-inning job in the short term. Ike Davis, meanwhile, is all but being anointed the first baseman of the future, to the point that David Wright is offering up advice on how to handle such a scenario. Plus, Josh Thole should be ready for the majors (full time) soon enoughBaseball Prospectus has good things to say about him — and Fernando Martinez is still only 21 years old. Though we imagine you got your fill of F-Mart hype last season.
