Big East Tournament: The Underdogs Are Here!

After Syracuse fell to Georgetown yesterday (possibly because of a couple of jerk bloggers jumping on the Orange bandwagon), things only got stranger at the Garden: Villanova lost to Marquette, Notre Dame knocked off Pitt, and Cincinnati came thisclose to upsetting West Virgina, who avoided overtime thanks to a banked-in, buzzer-beating Da’Sean Butler three. In the words of the poet Richard J. Vitale, it was upset city baby!

Aside from producing a final four that wreaked havoc on your bracket — you’ll never win your Big East Tournament office pool now! — each of yesterday’s games came down to the final minutes: All were decided by seven or fewer points. And while the matchups for tonight’s semifinal games aren’t quite as sexy now — we’ll take Syracuse-Villanova over Georgetown-Marquette any day — there’s no denying that yesterday was a pretty terrific day of hoops. Bill Clinton, in attendance at yesterday’s games, certainly appeared to enjoy himself. He went to Georgetown, though, so he would.
