The Masters golf tournament is known for its archaic, ultraconservative nature, whether it’s the club’s dogged insistence that women not be allowed to play at Augusta, its scary racial history (it wasn’t until 1990 that a black man was allowed in the club, though it always encouraged visiting players to use black men as caddies), or just those crazy winners jackets. The Masters has been slow to adjust to the television age, and they’ve always been extremely restrictive about what they allow the networks to show. Well, this year, ESPN has a distinct interest in the workings of one non-caddying black man, and formally requested Augusta to let them cut into regular ESPN programming to show the first round of Woods’s August day. Amusingly, Augusta has compromised in a ridiculous way: ESPN will be allowed to cut in to show Tiger’s drives … but that’s it. So be ready: Much of your Thursday and Friday of Masters weekend will consist of watching Tiger Woods swinging really hard and then squinting. The television event of the century!
