Javier Vazquez’s line from this afternoon — four earned runs in five-and-a-third innings — wasn’t particularly good, but it’s better than the eight runs in five-and-two-thirds he allowed during his first outing of the season last week in Tampa. So baby steps, we guess. Joel Piniero shut the Yankees down for seven innings, and after scoring a couple of runs off the Angels’ middle relief in the eighth, the Yanks went down quietly in the ninth against Fernando Rodney, losing 5–3. The season’s first pie will have to wait. Yankee fans booed Vazquez as he walked off the mound — a fact that drew the outrage of at least one blog. But while we agree that, yes, it’s only two games and it’s a bit early to try to run Vazquez out of town, we find it strange that anyone would get so excited over notoriously harsh Yankee fans expressing their displeasure that their worst nightmares about Vazquez are so far coming true.
