Joe Girardi isn’t happy today. Last night, Orioles pitcher Jeremy Guthrie hit Jorge Posada on the right knee, leading to the catcher’s removal from the game. Neither Girardi nor Posada thinks he beaned him on purpose or anything — Guthrie also hit two Yankees in a spring-training game this year — but the manager is irked nonetheless. His argument boils down to this: Guthrie should be better at pitching (or at least, have better control), so as to keep the Yankees safe.
No one agrees more than Guthrie, who in his postgame remarks apologized to Posada and admitted he, too, wished his command were better, albeit for different reasons. He probably wishes he could have a do-over of last night as a whole: He allowed seven runs (six earned) in four-and-two-thirds innings as the Yankees cruised to an 8–3 win.
As for Posada, he’s unlikely to play today — he stayed in the game to run the bases, but said his leg went “kind of numb” running from third to home — but doesn’t think he’ll wind up on the DL. It’s also unknown whether the Yankees would bring up a third catcher while Posada is day-to-day, but options include Chad Moeller and Jesus Montero.
