As a general rule, everyone who plays football for Boise State looks cool. It’s the blue uniforms and the blue turf; Broncos players always look like they have come from the future. Kyle Wilson, cornerback for Boise State and the first-round pick of the New York Jets last night, came to Boise State the reason most players go to Boise State: He didn’t have a lot of other offers. (He’s one of only two starters BSU is losing from last year, a major reason they’re considered a potential national championship contender this year.) Wilson headed west from New Jersey, where he was lightly recruited because of his height. He’s back in New Jersey now.
Jets coach Rex Ryan has already said Wilson will be the team’s starting nickel back — not this Nickelback — and will play on punt returns, which is a lot to give a guy who hasn’t hit training camp or signed yet. But you can understand: Wilson had been projected as high as the seventh-overall pick, and Ryan and company were ecstatic that he fell all the way to 29th.
Wilson was the MVP of the New Jersey State Championship Game both his junior and senior years and a member of the National Honor Society. (We do not know what period he had lunch.) The pick is not one the Jets made out of need; many felt the Jets needed a pass rusher rather than another corner. But Wilson is going to be very fun to watch — check out these highlight videos. We just hope he looks as cool in green as he did in blue.
