The Yankees brought their 2009 World Series trophy to the White House today, and even the president couldn’t resist a couple of good-natured jabs at the Evil Empire. Said Obama: “Now, it’s been nine years since your last title — which must have felt like an eternity for Yankees fans. I think other teams would be just fine with a spell like that. The Cubs, for example.” (To be fair, that was all likely just a setup for a joke about the Cubs.) And also this: When Obama posed with the trophy, a member of the Yankee organization joked that it might be the only chance the president — a White Sox fan — gets to hold the trophy. (Don’t spend too long thinking about the logic of that statement, by the way.) Replied Obama: “And you wonder why the other teams don’t root for you.”
