A month ago, we anticipated that the Mets might bring up top first-base prospect Ike Davis in early May, with the team around .500 and needing a spark. We were a bit optimistic on the record and late on the timing: It looks like Davis could be in the starting lineup tonight. The Mets designated Mike Jacobs for assignment over the weekend, and Daniel Murphy is still weeks away from returning from injury. Considering Frank Catalanotto and Alex Cora played first in St. Louis, Davis will be a handy guy to have around. The future is now. But also, the future is the future, and you have to think Davis will ultimately play on better teams than this one. You’d have to hope so, anyway.
