Yesterday, for the first time in more than 37 years, the Rangers and Islanders made a trade: The Rangers sent a sixth-round pick in this year’s draft to the Isles for a 19-year-old defenseman named Jyri Niemi. This is mostly only noteworthy because of the teams involved, but if you must know: Niemi’s played three seasons for the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League — in 50 games last season, he scored eight goals, registered 21 assists, and accumulated 67 penalty minutes — and he captained the Finnish team in the 2010 U-20 Junior World Championship. For what it’s worth — and we’ll defer to their opinion here — Rangers-prospect blog the Prospect Park likes the move. [Rangers Report/LoHud.com, Prospect Park]
