United States fans looking for some early pleasure in the World Cup before tomorrow’s Revolutionary War Redux madness — punish Rooney for BP! — found it in the World Cup opener, as host nation South Africa battled the USA’s hated rival Mexico to a 1–1 tie. It’s an outstanding result for Bafana Bafana, who were heavy underdogs. It could have been worse for the Mexicans, who dominated the first half but couldn’t score; South Africa had multiple second-half chances, including one in the 89th minute. Anyway, the World Cup is officially under way … and Joe Biden was there! Wearing an awesome red blazer. Next up: France versus Uruguay, at 2:30 p.m.
