Lance Stephenson is of the tradition of famous recent New York City basketball players like Stephon Marbury and Sebastian Telfair in that everyone thinks he’s overhyped because he played in New York City. People didn’t learn that about Marbury and Telfair until later, but with Stephenson, his sticker price is being preemptively marked down heading into Thursday’s NBA Draft. After one year at Cincinnati, Stephenson had been hoping to be a near-lottery pick, but now some experts and scouts think he could even fall to the second round. (Only first-round picks receive guaranteed contracts.) He truly is all over the map, mock draft–wise. ESPN’s Chad Ford has him going No. 24 to Atlanta, but SI.com’s Ian Thomson, Sporting News’ Sean Deveney, and Yahoo Sports! Mike McGraw have him nowhere in the first round. Lots of draft coverage coming this week, by the way. This is your “warm-up” post.
