Forgive Johan Santana’s Grumpy Mood

In his last five starts, Johan Santana — the one guy the Mets could count on to give them a solid chance of winning every five days — has given up three earned runs in 36 and two-thirds innings. (That’s an 0.74 ERA, if you’re counting.) In those five games, the Mets are 1–4. Last night was perhaps the worst of them yet, with Johan tossing seven shutout innings and the Mets subsequently blowing the lead and losing 5–1 in eleven innings. (Adrian Gonzalez hit a walk-off grand slam off Raul Valdes.) The real culprit was Francisco Rodriguez, who blew his third save. K-Rod’s ERA is 2.22 and his strikeout rate is up a bit from last year … but his fastball isn’t as fast as it used to be and he’s still signed for two more seasons. The Mets are now back at .500, again, and four and a half games behind the suddenly out-of-control-crazy-good Braves. The Amazin’s begin a three-game set with the Marlins at Citi Field tomorrow night.
