If anyone would have had any idea in the preseason that Mike Pelfrey would be this good, maybe more people would have liked the Mets. Or at least not made fun of them so much. (We’re included, we know!) Pelfrey was excellent again last night, giving up just one run, four hits, and two walks in eight innings for a 4–2 win over the Padres. (The win puts the Mets back over .500 and three and a half games behind the smoking-hot Atlanta Braves.) Here are Pelfrey’s stats for the year so far: 8–1, 2.39 ERA … and don’t forget his one save. David Wright is the traditional placeholder for the Mets in the All-Star Game, but right now Big Pelf has to be the most likely candidate. Oh, Wright and Ike Davis homered as well, making last night the Platonic ideal Mets game.
