Jamie Moyer is 47 years old. He’s just seven months younger than the New York Mets organization. Last night, his fastball — or should we say, “fastball”? — topped out at roughly 80 miles per hour. (Though contrary to what you may have read on Twitter, he wasn’t present at Charlie Manuel’s birth.) Anyway, last night he became the oldest man to beat the Yankees in a 6–3 win at Yankee Stadium.
Meanwhile, A.J. Burnett, who’s a high-school freshman younger than Moyer, got hit, and hard: A bases-clearing triple by Shane Victorino made it 4–0 after two, back-to-back home runs by Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth made it 6–1 after three, and by the end of the fourth, Burnett had left the game to a chorus of boos. (He’s 0–3 with a 9.00 ERA thus far in June.) Jorge Posada, who also homered last night, said he deserved most of the blame for Burnett’s outing, since it had been so long since he’d caught the righty. It’s always something with that battery, isn’t it?
Speaking of Posada, he also admitted last night that his right foot was hurting toward the end of the game. Meanwhile, Alex Rodriguez’s leisurely jog into second on a ninth-inning double raised some eyebrows in his first game back in the lineup. (A-Rod said he’s fine and that he didn’t “see the benefit” of running all out down four runs, which we suppose he’s allowed to say since he did indeed make it safely.) For what it’s worth, Tampa Bay lost, too, so despite being overmatched by a senior citizen (and failing to complete a ninth-inning rally against Brad Lidge), they’re still tied for first.
