The Mets Are a Steamroller, Baby

The Mets, after a 5–0 whitewashing of the Detroit Tigers (a team that was red hot until they hit Citi Field) last night, are 15–4 in the month of June, for a winning percentage of .789. It already ranks among the best Mets months of the past decade: that wonderful run in September 2001 (16–5) and the August 2000 charges (20–9). (We’re not counting March 2008, in which the Mets were 1–0, and October 2009, when they were 3–0.) We are in rarefied air at this point.

The winner, once again, last night was R.A. Dickey, who is now 6–0 and making a rather solid case to stay in the Mets rotation, regardless of a potential Cliff Lee or Roy Oswalt trade. Jose Reyes tripled and homered, the Mets cruised along — it was just another June evening. It’s a delicate thing when a team is clicking in every way like this, and it’s something you’re afraid to touch, lest it crumble.

The Amazin’s are now only a half-game behind the Braves and a game and a half up in the wild-card chase. (Wild-card magic number: 91!) Tonight it’s that other shocking rotation staple, Hisanori Takahashi, facing Armando Galarraga, whose name you might remember from awhile back. The Mets have been as gorgeous this month as they have ever been in any month. You almost don’t want to talk about it. Shhh.
