The next time the Yankees play Baltimore, the Orioles may have a new manager. Just to be clear, they next play Baltimore five days from now. Following a three-game Yankees sweep this week — capped by yesterday’s 6–3 win — the Orioles dropped to 24 games under .500 and 21 games out of first place. (The O’s have lost eight in a row.) And according to multiple reports, Trembley may not make it to next Tuesday and may be fired as early as today. Not to make light of anyone losing their job, but, at least he had to see this coming.
As for the game itself: CC Sabathia tossed seven innings to earn his first win in exactly a month (worth noting: Sabathia hasn’t beaten an opponent other than the Orioles since April 16), Alex Rodriguez smacked a two-run homer in the third (the 591st of his career), and Mariano Rivera closed the game out after allowing the first two base runners to reach (he touched 95 on the radar gun).
The win makes six of seven and eight of ten for the Yankees, who now take a quick break from playing last-place teams and travel to Toronto for a three-game series. But it’s just a quick break: Once that’s over, it’s on to Baltimore and then back home to face Houston.
