Sorry, Times: David Lee Is Not Better Than Amar’e Stoudemire

Like everybody else, we enjoyed Harvey Araton’s elegy to David Lee’s Knicks career; Lee was perpetually unappreciated, and ultimately shown the door with little regard to his contributions. He’s also an excellent guy, as far as anyone knows (which, with athletes, is little, really). But Araton’s attempt to claim that David Lee, because he was nice enough to attend the funeral of an NBA security official, is somehow better than Amar’e Stoudemire, is crazy. Stoudemire beat Lee last year in almost almost every advanced statistic, has a vague interest in defense that Lee totally lacked, and also brings energy to MSG in a way that Lee, fair or not, never could. Is Stoudemire maybe a bit overpaid relative to Lee? Maybe. But the idea that the Knicks are somehow worse off because they chose Amar’e Stoudemire over a friendly guy who attends funerals but skips defense might make for a nice column, but doesn’t make a lick of sense. The Knicks won’t regret letting go of David Lee — they traded him for three immediate rotation pieces for crying out loud — and they made the right choice. No offense, David. Again.
