The Rangers, undeterred as always by the presence of a salary cap, have signed Derek Boogaard to a four-year contract worth $1.65 per year. Boogaard’s an excellent fighter — though he’s only dropped the gloves nine times in each of the previous two seasons — and that’s about it. He hasn’t scored a goal since his rookie year in 2005–06; we are not sure he owns a stick. (By the way, Jody Shelley — a capable fighter himself — landed in Philadelphia for $3 million over three years.) Almost makes the two-year, $2.8 million contract they gave last summer to Donald Brashear seem fiscally responsible, doesn’t it?
