Fourteen of the 30 Major League Baseball teams return to action tonight. The Yankees will not be one of them. It’s one more day of rest for the players (and coaches, and announcers) before returning tomorrow night for what’s sure to be an emotional three-game series against Tampa Bay. Some Yankee-related odds and ends:
• If the Yankees are looking for immediate help in the bullpen, George Sherrill has reportedly been placed on outright waivers by Los Angeles. The lefty had an 0–1 record and a 7.32 ERA for the Dodgers this season, so he’d fit right in.
• Alex Rodriguez has a minor injury to his right thumb, according to Brian Cashman, but that had nothing to do with Joe Girardi’s decision not to use him in the All-Star Game on Tuesday. Said Cashman: “It’s not even worth talking about.”
• And, via the LoHud Yankees blog, USA Today has been running a poll since Tuesday about whether George Steinbrenner belongs in the Hall of Fame. The unscientific results, with 1,167 votes cast: 83 percent “yes,” and 17 percent “no.”
