Assuming Mother Nature cooperates — and Weather.com is a little skeptical — our summerlong Minor League Stadium Crawl continues tonight with a visit to Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium to see the Newark Bears take on the Bridgeport Bluefish. Yesterday afternoon, the Bears welcomed former Met Edgardo Alfonso back to the lineup — he’d been on the inactive list — and his two hits keyed a 4–1 Newark victory. But if you’re looking for Alfonso’s former Mets teammate Armando Benitez, you’re out of luck. Benitez pitched so well for the Bears earlier this season that the Florida Marlins signed him to a Minor League contract and assigned him to AAA New Orleans.
Heading into this, our third stop, Long Island’s Suffolk County Sports Park sits atop the leaderboard, six points ahead of New Jersey’s Skylands Park. As always, if you’re at the game, do stop over and say hello. First pitch is at 6:35, and because it’s Wednesday, kids under 12 eat free.
