One of the biggest hits during the Mets’ comeback yesterday came from first-baseman Mike Hessman. You know Mike Hessman, right? Was the teacher in Head of the Class? Uncle Meat in Rob Zombie’s Halloween 2? Johnny Fever? Okay, not that guy. This Mike Hessman is a journeyman minor leaguer who pinch-hit Monday and started yesterday, his first two games of the season. Monday was his first at-bat since 2008 with Detroit, but he knows his minors: He’s 32 years old and is the active leader in minor league home runs with 329. He has a chance to become the sixth man to hit 400 minor league homers. Hessman has been in the minors so long that he has served as the blowout pitcher three times. We could look at his minor-league Baseball-Reference page all day, honestly.
