Now that Jason Bay is on the DL with a concussion, Jeff Francoeur comfortably has a spot in the lineup. This is bad, considering one of the best parts about Carlos Beltran returning is that it would rid right field of Francoeur’s hacktastic ways with the bat. (His on-base percentage is actually lower than that of Mike Jacobs, the guy the Mets cut a month into the season.) But he smiles and is fun with the media, so he gets the Alex Cora Memorial Leeway. It actually paid off for the Mets last night, as Francoeur hit a home run off Billy Wagner in the top of the ninth to give the Mets a 3-2 win. If you’re still keeping score, that’s now a six-and-a-half-game deficit in the NL East, and 4.3 percent playoff odds. The ongoing Mike Pelfrey adventure continues tonight.
