Mets Gut Out Meaningless Victory

If the Mets were in a legitimate pennant race — they’re not, of course, though they do have better playoff odds than the Dodgers, Rod Barajas’s new team — last night’s victory would have been particularly inspiring. The Mets lost an early lead and fought back to tie it and win, thanks to a walk-off bloop single by Luis Castillo, as if Castillo had any other kind of single. The hit also might have been a little more inspiring had Castillo looked like he cared about a game-winning hit at all; as Jason Fry put it at Faith and Fear in Flushing, “he displayed all the satisfaction of a man who’d completed a transaction at an ATM.” At least the other Mets looked happy. Though part of us likes to think they’re jumping around after reading Jon Heyman’s report about Omar Minaya yesterday.
