The Liberty Are Six Wins Away From a Title

In the last 38 years, only two teams who play at Madison Square Garden have won championships: the 1972-73 New York Knicks and the 1993-94 New York Rangers. It’s starting to look like there’s a real chance at a third. The WNBA’s New York Liberty, the hottest team in the league over the last month and a half, last night drilled the Indiana Fever 85-73 in the Eastern Conference semifinals, thanks largely to 23 first-half points by Cappie Pondexter. The semis are just best-of-three, so if the Liberty win in Indianapolis on Sunday, they’ll advance to the conference finals (also best-of-three) against either Atlanta or Washington. (Atlanta leads that series 1-0.) Even if you don’t care about the WNBA, an actual non-Yankees champion in this town would be something anyway. And hey: plenty of tickets still available.
