It sounds like the beginning of an old-timey hockey joke: An agent, an owner, and a general manager walk into a league office. In actuality, this is all that’s really known about the Devils’ second attempt to sign Ilya Kovalchuk, this time to a contract that won’t be voided for circumventing the collective bargaining agreement. Jay Grossman (the agent), Jeff Vanderbeek (the owner), and Lou Lamoriello (the GM) met with league officials yesterday, but deputy commissioner Bill Daly tells Yahoo Sports that they didn’t submit a new contract for consideration, contrary to published reports. Instead, Daly says they “talked conceptually.” Training camps, by the way, are less than a month away.
