The Mets’ Battle for Third Place Is ON

If the Mets go 30-8 the rest of the way, they might make the playoffs. In lieu of the obviously tiny possibility that that doesn’t happen, they’re fighting for third place in the N.L. East with the Florida Marlins. And hey, look who’s in town tonight. The Mets’ six-game home stand kicks off with the Marlins this evening — they have three against Houston over the weekend — and even though third place doesn’t actually mean anything, we’re going to pretend it does because there’s still a week left in August and baseball still has a long way to go. The Mets face stud Josh Johnson tonight, but bring R.A. Dickey to the mound, whose ERA is 2.41 and who has only had one bad game all year. We hope you’ve enjoyed Dickey this season, because if he keeps this up over the season’s last month-plus, he might be too expensive for the Mets to keep around next year. Hey, who didn’t see that coming? (Note: No one saw that coming.)
