Considering Mets manager Jerry Manuel is destined to be fired within hours of the final game of the season — October 3, by the way — it’s comforting, one supposes, that he has dropped the fake befuddled Zen thing (the Zen thing is fake, not the befuddled, to be clear) and is now acting all cranky and annoyed. It would seem odd timing, like Jerry Manuel just discovered his team isn’t that good or something, which would seem ridiculous if Jerry Manuel weren’t exactly the type of manager who would just now be discovering the Mets aren’t that good..
Anyway, after the Mets’ 3-2 loss to the Astros, Manuel used some Very Strong Words after the game.
“It’s pathetic,” he said. “That’s a very poor effort on our part offensively.”
See? “Pathetic!” He’s so mad! Okay, so maybe Manuel wasn’t exactly setting himself on fire and throwing himself through a wall. But generally speaking, a manager must have a certain unimpeachable authority to start calling his players pathetic, and, suffice to say, Manuel does not have that unimpeachable authority. And there’s just about a month and a half left until he has no authority at all, impeachable or otherwise. One would almost call it pathetic.
