David Wright Is Lonely

The Daily News paints the saddest picture of David Wright today. As the game story for the Mets’$2 4–1 loss to the Braves last night, Andy Martino sketches Wright as the sole samurai warrior left on a doomed, murky trek toward the end of the season. Apparently, Wright’s three buddies on the team were Jeff Francoeur, Rod Barajas, and Jason Bay, and now those guys are gone, to Texas, Los Angeles, and the place where your brain is rested for a while. Only Wright remains (in the weird, empty, epic parlance of daily beat writing), “witness[ing] dizzying change,” having lost all his pals, “once again alone as the face of an embattled franchise.” Basically, the story is useful not so much as a “what David Wright thinks about the state of the Mets” piece as much as it is as a “Hey, who does David Wright hang out with on the Mets?” one. So, who have David Wright’s closest friends on the team been? Barajas and Francoeur (Wright must hate friends who walk), Bay, Doug Mientkiewicz, Cliff Floyd, and Joe McEwing. We had forgotten about Wright’s almost uncomfortably close friendship with McEwing (now manager of the Class A Winston-Salem Dash) back in the day. We hope Wright is able to make it through, as the millionaire star of a Major League baseball team, so alone and abandoned.
