Said the Yankees’ third baseman in Minnesota yesterday: “I mean, for us to be David in this situation, I think, is great.” Now, the Yankees do have some concerns heading into the postseason — arguably enough to question their status as the Vegas favorites to win the pennant — and it is true that they didn’t win their division this year. But calling the Yankees (2010 payroll: $213,359,389) the David to the Goliath that is the Twins ($97,659,167), the Rangers ($64,810,570), and the Rays ($72,847,133) is still more than a little absurd. And, just to put things in context, he’d go on to admit, “The Yankees are always going to be somewhat favorites because we’re the Yankees and that comes with the territory,” before adding, “But they want to call us underdogs, we’ll take that role.”
