The defensive end hasn’t played since Week 3 because of a herniated disc in his neck, and now the Giants have placed him on injured reserve, ending his season — and possibly his Giants career. Both Jerry Reese and Tom Coughlin said they want Kiwanuka, who’d recorded four sacks in those three games, to return next season if he’s healthy, but he isn’t under contract for 2011, he could become an unrestricted free agent depending on what happens with the league’s collective bargaining agreement, and Jason Pierre-Paul, who hasn’t recorded a sack yet but has impressed his coaches so far, could take on a bigger role. Kiwanuka, at least, says doctors have told him that the injury should heal on its own without surgery, but while he vows to be ready by training camp, he only committed to the Giants “throughout the term of my contract.” [NYDN, ESPN New York]
