First, on Saturday night, the Yankees completed a sweep of the Twins in perhaps the least stressful series-clincher imaginable. Then yesterday, while they rested (and in CC Sabathia’s case, watched football), the Rays and Rangers did them a favor by extending their ALDS series to a decisive Game 5, to take place tomorrow night. So with Cliff Lee and David Price scheduled to face off in that game, neither would be available to start the ALCS opener Friday night. And unless they were to pitch on short rest, neither would make his first start against the Yankees until Game 3 next Monday — giving either opponent a nice advantage in that game, but giving the Yankees more favorable match-ups earlier in the series, and guaranteeing the Rangers couldn’t try to squeeze three starts out of Lee (who’s never started on three days’ rest anyway) in a seven-game series.
