Mark Feinsand talked to a Major League scout whose basic argument — and don’t shoot the messenger here — is that Jeter makes up for his lack of range with smarts, positioning, and instincts. (He also argues that his UZR doesn’t mean anything, noting that Robinson Cano and Mark Teixeira had a negative UZR as well.) Still, even this scout doesn’t sound totally sold. Said the scout, “In my opinion I think he’s well-deserving. I know his range is not as good as a lot of other guys, but aside from that, I still think he’s above average.” Not exactly a ringing endorsement, though this line of thinking is good news for solid B+ students everywhere who hold out hope they’ll be named valedictorian.
