As you’d expect in a league that almost saw Rory Fitzpatrick voted a starter in an All-Star Game, there are no shortage of write-in campaigns in the NHL this year, including one for Sean Avery being led by the New York Rangers Blog. So how’s Avery doing? Well, he’s received 64,450 votes as of this afternoon, twentieth among forwards and second among write-in forward candidates. It’s a mild success, but one made more impressive when considering that fellow write-in candidate Alexander Semin — who’s currently fifth in the league in scoring and could very well end up the first player selected in the awesome fantasy draft that will divide up the teams in Raleigh — has received only 62,611 votes at last count. (He’s ahead of both Sedin twins, too, much to the dismay of the Swedes.) Sadly, there’s little chance Avery will actually get the chance to take an instigator penalty in an All-Star Game, as he joked he’d become the first player to do. Only the top six overall vote-getters will automatically make the team, and Elisha Cuthbert has about as good a chance of making the team otherwise. [Rangers Report/Journal News]
