It’s Probably Good That the Jets Are Going Over the New Overtime Rules

As you probably already know, the overtime rules in the NFL playoffs now differ from those used during the regular season: In the playoffs, a touchdown on the opening drive still ends the game, but a field goal gives the opposing team a possession, with a chance to either win on a touchdown or extend the game with a field goal of their own. (If the team with possession first doesn’t score, or if the teams trade field goals on their opening drives, the game reverts back to sudden-death rules.) In any case, the Jets probably know these rules, too, but special teams coach Mike Westhoff plans to go over the basics with the team today — probably not a bad idea, considering at least one Jet proved he wasn’t entirely up to speed on the league’s overtime policies earlier this season. In any case, the new rules add a layer of strategy to games tied after four quarters. And while this should probably go without saying, both Westhoff and Rex Ryan (who likes to defer when he wins the pregame coin toss to let his defense set the tone) agree they’d prefer to receive the ball to begin overtime, even with the new rules.
