That a 38-year-old goalie with a 5-18-1 record would be asked to share duties with another netminder, even just for now, would normally not be all that newsworthy, particularly when that 38-year-old goalie has posted his worst goals-against average and save percentage since becoming a full-time NHL’er in 1993–94. But when that goalie is Martin Brodeur, a future Hall of Famer with a reputation as a workhorse — he’s appeared in at least 75 games five times — it’s worth paying attention to. (True story: In 2006–07, Brodeur started 78 games, and the Devils won the Atlantic Division with this kid serving as Brodeur’s backup.) On Friday night, after Johan Hedberg defeated the Thrashers, the Star-Ledger asked Jacques Lemaire if he was considering splitting the duties. “Not for now,” he said then.
